45 Hong Kong Street is an Art Deco Style Shophouse located within the Boat Quay Conservation Area. The Original Architecture reflects the Art Deco Style where design was influenced by modern advances in technology, industrialization and post war economy. Due to the embracement of the wonders of Machine Age, traditional organic ornaments were discarded for more streamlined designs, curved corners and strong horizontal lines together with geometric shapes, zigzag roofs and flagpoles.

We were approached by the client to restore and revitalize the shop-house to adapt to its modern usage. Besides restoring the basic elements of the shophouse, we introduce industrial/raw accents inspired by Art Deco Shophouses’ heritage and history while preserving its essence of peranakan culture within the shophouse. Pop colours such as dark turquoise which was inspired by the Singapore River are used to amplify the Art Deco Style.
