CDL Eco Train

CDL ECO TRAIN

CDL Eco Train

A decommissioned train cabin converted into a learning gallery, the CDL Eco-train is a first of its kind initiative in Singapore. Even though it has reached the end of its lifecycle as a train cabin, we hope to breathe new life into it by converting it into a learning gallery. This way, no additional building structures are required, reducing material usage and carbon emissions. The train is sited within the garden space of City Square Mall to encapsulate upon the entry promenade. With its striking exterior, we envisaged the train as a colourful educational board to showcase the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) values and attract public attention.

Operationally, the CDL EcoTrain is designed to achieve nett zero energy usage. To track energy from its rooftop solar panels in real time, it has an Energy Monitoring System that is driven by EcoStruxure and supplied by Schneider Electric. On the exterior, the train uses GUSH HydroPro Solar Enamel Paint, an eco-friendly water-based coating that is formaldehyde-free, ultra-low odor and extremely low VOC (volatile organic compounds) that minimizes damage to the environment. The solar reflective properties of the paint utilizes hollow glass beads to prevent excessive heat gain on the cabin interiors, reducing energy consumption for air-conditioning. The rubber flooring on the ramp and exterior flooring by BTSports is made from recycled tennis shoes(black) and tennis balls(green).

Within the space, the gallery is envisioned as a central display unit with graphic boards. We avoided covering the internal windows and doors to maximise natural lighting and reduce energy needs for lighting. The existing train doors are also re-used for the main entrance. Unistrate panels, made from 100% recycled wood fibres and minerals manufactured with zero-glue technology, is applied to the ceiling and exterior signage. Additionally, NORA rubber flooring, made from sustainably sourced natural rubber, is used inside the train.

These innovations demonstrate our dedication and commitment to environmentally sustainable design, energy efficiency and innovative green practices.
